Pongal 2015 in Little India

Pongal Festival Street Light-up on Serangoon Road

Pongal is a Hindu festival observed by Tamil people in Singapore. It's a four days -Harvest- festival, takes place from 14 to 18 January this year, according to local timing.
The first day starts with the Bhogi Pongal when people clean their homes and discard unused things.

Second day is the actual day, called Thai Pongal when people prepare the traditional dish-which has the same name as the festival- called Pongal*, generally at sunrise, at opened space.

Ladies are preparing sweet Pongal (rice boiled with milk and jaggery) in front of their house

The celebration includes decorating the household with kollams (drawing with chalk, traditionally with rice flour) too.
They make offerings from the freshly prepared Pongal to Surya (Sun God) which signifies the good harvest.

The third day called Mattu Pongal, decorating the cattle with garlands shows their gratitude for the good milk and favor in farming to the cows.
Thanksgiving prayer was conducted at the Hasting Road for this occasion to honour the cattle.

Kaanum Pongal is the last day of the festival and the time for family reunions. Families and friends visit each other or in Tamil Nadu, people go to beach to spend the day together.
